St. Patrick's Day
We had a lot of fun in the lead up to St. Patrick's Day last week! As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge we had a special assembly in school where we performed "Is Taephota Mise" and "Ceann Gualaí Glúin" for the whole school. We also watched other classes performing Irish dancing, tunes on the tin whistle and songs in Irish. On the Friday before St. Patrick's Day we all wore green into school. We had made head bands in class that week which we wore to assembly too.
Musical instruments
Last week we learned about different sounds in the environment. We thought about all the different sounds we might hear in school, at home or outside. On Friday we made percussion instruments. We experimented with materials such as plastic cups, crayons, pencils and paper to make drums and shakers. We then played our instruments along to music. We really enjoyed this lively lesson!
World book day
World Book Day took place on Thursday 5th March 2015. The children were invited to dress up as a character of their choice. Lots of children also brought their favourite book to school with them. Lots of different characters turned up to school such as cowboys, princesses and superheroes. There was also a racing driver, a Spanish lady and a skeleton. Ms. Merrins came into our class for Power Hour dressed as Little Red Riding Hood. She got a very big fright when a wolf sat down beside her!!
World Book Day Activities
As part of World Book Day each child was provided with the book Elmer's Parade. We read this book together in class before bringing it home.
Before lunch, Second Class came to perform a Reader's Theatre play for us. They were really entertaining. We were separated into small groups so we could enjoy the shows. After the performances, the girls in Second Class helped us to write sentences about World Book Day and the plays we had seen.

Spring
We learned all about spring recently. During spring lots of flowers such as snowdrops and daffodils begin to grow. Animals such as lambs and calves are also born at this time of year. We discussed the various signs of spring that we can see around us and the type of clothes that are suitable to wear in different types of weather.
For our spring artwork we looked at photographs on the Interactive Whiteboard which contained different elements of spring. We talked about all the different signs of spring that we could see in the photos and then used these as an inspiration for our own pictures. Everyone painted their own picture based on the theme spring. When our paintings were dry we used lots of different crepe paper to enhance our art work.
Food Dudes
Food Dudes is a programme managed by Bord Bia and receives financial support from the Department of Agriculture. It is designed to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables and to enable them to enjoy eating healthy diets both in school and at home.
Everyday the children are provided with different types of fruit and vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers, peppers, apples, raisins and bananas. Children are encouraged to eat their portion of fruit and vegetables each day. Children who finish both their fruit and vegetables receive rewards everyday such as stickers, lunch boxes and rulers.

Structured Play
Structured play takes place in the classroom daily. It is a great way for us to learn in a relaxed, hands-on and active environment. It helps us to develop our gross motor skills and dexterity, social skills, language and literacy, problem-solving strategies, abstract thinking and imagination.
We complete different activities each day such as literacy or maths games, drawing, cutting, writing, reading, completing jigsaws, making things with play-doh, playing with toy cars or animals and board games. We also love to play make-believe with dolls, a kitchen and BBQ set or our office area.

St. Valentine's Day
We were very busy on Thursday and Friday making Valentine's Day cards for the special people in our lives. First of all we designed, coloured in and cut out a love heart which we stuck to the inside of our card. We also wrote special messages on the inside of our cards. Finally we designed the front of our cards (and the back of our cards in some cases!)
We had lots of fun and really hope you love your cards.
When we arrived to school on Friday morning were really surprised to find that even Sam had joined in on the fun and made a Valentine's Day card for us. Sam must really like us to make a special card for us!
